Velana Airport to Malé & Hulhumalé: every way to get there

Ferry, bridge bus, taxi, or speedboat — what each option actually costs, how long it takes, and which one fits your situation.

Velana International Airport sits on its own island, Hulhulé, separated from both Malé and Hulhumalé by water. Since the Sinamalé Bridge opened in 2018, getting off the airport island is far easier than it used to be — but which option makes sense depends on where you're headed and how much luggage you're carrying.

By bridge bus (to Malé or Hulhumalé)

A public bus service run by MTCC crosses the Sinamalé Bridge, connecting the airport to both Malé and Hulhumalé. It's the cheapest option by far — a few dollars or less — and runs at regular intervals through the day. The trade-off is that it's not door-to-door: you'll get dropped at a bus terminal and need a short taxi or walk from there, which matters if you're carrying a lot of luggage.

By ferry (to Malé)

The public ferry between the airport and Malé is the older, traditional route, and it's still running. It's a short crossing, inexpensive, and puts you closer to central Malé than the bridge bus does. It doesn't run 24 hours, so if you're landing very late at night, check the schedule before counting on it.

By taxi

Taxis operate on both sides of the bridge and are the simplest option if you have heavy luggage or are arriving at an odd hour. Agree on the fare (or confirm the meter) before the ride starts. This is generally the most expensive of the land options, but still relatively affordable compared to many other destinations.

By speedboat or seaplane (to a resort)

If you're headed straight to a resort island rather than Malé or Hulhumalé, you likely won't use any of the above — resorts typically arrange speedboat or seaplane transfers directly from the airport, usually booked as part of your resort stay. Look for your resort's transfer desk in the arrivals area.
