A half-day layover itinerary, on foot

For the 6–10 hour gap between flights — a walkable loop through Malé that gets you back to the ferry terminal in time.

Updated September 2026 · 6 min read

If you've got somewhere between six and ten hours between flights, Malé is small enough to see a genuine slice of on foot, starting and ending near the ferry terminal so you're never far from your return route to the airport.

Step 1: Get into Malé

From the airport, take the public ferry across to Malé (see our airport transport guide for details) — it's quick and drops you close to the harbour area where this walk starts.

Step 2: The fish market and harbour

Start at the local fish market near the harbour — it's active, loud, and gives you an immediate sense of daily life in Malé that resort islands don't show you. Mornings tend to be the most active time here.

Step 3: Walk through old Malé

Head inland through the older streets, where you'll pass small shops, local cafes, and the Grand Friday Mosque — one of the largest mosques in the country and worth seeing from outside even if you don't go in. This part of the walk is compact; the whole of central Malé can be crossed on foot in well under an hour.

Step 4: Lunch

Break for lunch at one of the local cafes or restaurants listed in our restaurants directory — most are within easy walking distance of this route.

Step 5: Republic Square and the waterfront

Finish near Republic Square and the waterfront promenade, a relaxed spot to sit before heading back. From here it's a short walk back to the ferry terminal.

Build in buffer time — aim to be back at the ferry terminal at least 2.5–3 hours before your flight, since you'll still need to cross back to the airport and get through security.
