Public transport in Malé and Hulhumalé: buses, ferries and taxis

How the MTCC buses and ferries work, what they cost, and when a taxi is the better choice.

Getting around Malé and Hulhumalé is cheap and simple once you know the options. The state-run company MTCC runs the public buses and ferries, and taxis fill the gaps. Fares and timetables change, so treat the numbers below as a guide and check the latest at rtl.mv or at the terminal.

Buses

MTCC operates several bus routes that serve the airport, Malé and Hulhumalé, with fares starting from around MVR 10. As a general pattern, one route crosses the Sinamalé Bridge between the airport and Malé about once an hour, and buses between the airport and Hulhumalé run about every 30 minutes for roughly MVR 10 to 15. Route numbers can change, so look at the sign on the bus or ask a staff member.

You can pay in cash (Maldivian rufiyaa, so keep small notes) or with an RTL card, which you can buy and top up at MTCC counters. Buses are meant for light luggage, so if you're carrying big bags a taxi is easier.

Two things that catch people out: service is reduced on Fridays, with a break around midday for prayers, and timetables change during Ramadan. Plan ahead on those days.

Ferries between Malé and Hulhumalé

MTCC runs a public ferry between Malé and Hulhumalé. It goes only a handful of times a day, takes around 20 minutes, and costs just a few dollars at most. It's slower than the bus but pleasant, and a good option when you're not in a rush. Check the times before you rely on it, especially in the evening.

The airport ferry and speedboat

Between the airport and Malé, there is a short sea crossing of around 10 minutes. MTCC also runs an Airport Express speedboat on this route. Confirm the current schedule and fare at the terminal or on rtl.mv. See our airport transport guide for all the ways to reach the city from Velana.

Taxis

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall around the clock, and fares from the airport are set by the government, so drivers shouldn't charge more than the regulated rate. A ride to Hulhumalé Phase 1 is roughly MVR 80 and to Phase 2 roughly MVR 85, taking around 10 minutes. A ride to Malé takes about 15 to 20 minutes across the bridge. Carry cash, as cards aren't guaranteed.

Which should you pick?

Cheapest: the MTCC bus or ferry, if you have light luggage and time.
Easiest with bags, or late at night: a taxi.
